We’re London Plumbing Solutions, a London Ontario plumbing contractor.
So why are we talking about mould?
Well, mould is caused by stagnant moisture.
And where do you think that moisture comes from?
Cracks in your foundation?
Torrential rains?
Melting snow seeping its way into your basement?
Yeah, sometimes.
But sometimes it’s caused by residential plumbing or commercial plumbing issues like leaky pipes, frozen pipes, clogged drain overflow, and more.
Whatever it is that’s causing it, it might go unnoticed at first.
That’s because this stuff can build up in your walls, causing major issues in your home.
That includes issues with your plumbing, of course, but also with the structure of your home.
But if you or your family are allergic to mould spores, you can get pretty sick from it.
It doesn’t have to be that way though.
Here’s some tips from experienced plumbers on how to prevent mould from growing in your home.
1. Take A Look For It In Common Places
Don’t forget to inspect and clean areas that are subject to dampness or water damage.
This includes the dark corners of your basement as well as under your sink and behind walls.
You can do a visual inspection yourself – as in, just take a look – but we can help as well.
We’re plumbers, of course, but we’ve also got a pretty good eye for what mould growth looks like.
We’ll find out what’s causing your mould growth and stop it at the source.
That way, when you get rid of your existing mould issue, you can be confident it’s not coming back.
2. Make Sure Your Home Is Ventilated
Mould grows in stagnation.
That’s why it tends to show up in the dark, dank corners of your basement.
Make sure your home is well ventilated, with plenty of natural air circulating.
Easier said than done in the winter, I know.
But the good news is that mould also needs moisture to grow, and since the air tends to be a lot drier in the winter, mould doesn’t grow as well anyway.
3. Keep Your House Dry
As we mentioned above, moisture + stagnation = mould.
So don’t let moisture just sit there in your home.
Clean up any water spills, take care of any water leakages, and use a dehumidifier in the areas more prone to moisture, like your basement.
What To Do If You Have Mold
Okay, so what do you do if you find mould?
Your first instinct might be to clean it up, but believe it or not that can make it worse.
That’s because mould has a bunch of spores on it, and agitating the mould can cause it to release those spores.
Not only is that stuff terrible to breathe in, it can spread around your house, making your problem worse.
Don’t paint over it either – that doesn’t help.
Instead, call a professional mould removal company.
Many of them have professional treatment for water damage, water extraction, small area waterproofing, and mould eradication.
If you’re in the market for a new house too, it’s a good idea to have it inspected beforehand to make sure there aren’t any hidden mould issues.
After all, mould isn’t always visible, but that doesn’t make it any less of a problem.
But while your mould removal company can come in and take care of the issue for you, that doesn’t mean they know how to deal with the source.
That’s especially true if it’s related to your plumbing.
But what happens once you’re done?
The mould removal company will inspect your home to discover the source of your problems.
And there are different solutions depending on each cause.
If it’s a result of a crack in your foundation, you’ll need to hire a foundation repair company.
But if it has to do with your plumbing, it pays to call a professional plumber.
Like London Plumbing Solutions.
If you notice a small leak in your plumbing, it’s tempting to just ignore it or to duct tape it and hope for the best.
But that’s creating more problems for you tomorrow.
Duct tape is fine for holding your pipes together while your plumber makes their way to your house, but it’s nowhere near a permanent solution.
Don’t ignore a small problem – it’ll become a big one faster than you think, and you’ll end up having to pay premium rates for a 24 hour emergency plumber near me.
Instead, your best option is to…
