About St. Thomas Ontario
St. Thomas Ontario is a city due south of London, about halfway between London and the quiet beach town of Port Stanley. It’s the set of Elgin County where it’s located, but is considered independent.
You might think the town is named after one of the many Catholic saints named Thomas, but it’s not. In fact, it’s named after Colonel Thomas Talbot, a colonial administrator in the 19th century. He wasn’t even a saint!
Settlement in the area that would become St. Thomas began when Captain Daniel Rapelje moved to the area in the early 19th century. He was a descendant of some of the earliest settlers of New Amsterdam, which we now know today as New York City. He came to the area in 1810, but in 1820 he divided his land into smaller lots which were more suitable for building a village around. St. Thomas began to grow in earnest during the railway boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. St. Thomas has had 26 different railways passing through it over the years. This is where it got its nickname, “The Railway City”.
Once rail began to decline as a form of transportation, St. Thomas’ economy shifted to automotive manufacturing. But some of its historic buildings have also been used for filming television shows and movies. In particular, the former psychiatric hospital is a popular location. If you’ve watched The Boys or Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, you might recognize some local locations.
